LOCAL BOYS TAKE PART IN CRUISE

A team of six boys from West Byfleet County Secondary School are taking part in a Solent cruiser this week organised by Surrey Schools’ Sailing and canoeing Association.

The boys, members of the school’s sailing club, have all done sailing before.  They are: Geoffrey Hall (16), Ian Stewart (16), David Salmon (15), Ian Seagar (15), Tony Swaine (16) and Timothy Constantine (16).

The team will join a small fleet of six boats manned by boys from other Surrey schools.   They spent this week cruising in the Solent and learning seamanship under rigorous conditions.

The fleet will rendezvous in Hurst Bay and proceed to Christchurch from three starting points – Hamble, Lymington and Keyhaven.  Shore visits will be made to Poole, Yarmouth, Buckler’s Hard, Ashlett, Chichester, Bosham and Cowes.

Crafts range from a 14ft dingy to a 28 ft cruising.   Five of the boys will have members of the school staff with them and another pupil experienced in sailing will be in the sixth boat.

Mr. W. Salmon, a master at the school, said the trip would make a change from racing.
