WOKING AND DISTRICT SCHOOLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY 1961

 

VENUE: CHOBHAM SECONDARY SCHOOL WEDNESDAY 15th FEBRUARY 1961

 

100 SCHOOLBOYS COMPETE

 

 

Over one hundred runners entered the Woking and District Schools’ Cross-Country championships at Chobham C.S. School on Wednesday week. The race was spilt into two sections junior (under 15) and intermediate (15-17).  In the junior race the first two runners home, Church and Wade, both of Goldsworth C.S. School, returned the same time, 12 min. 52 sec.

 

 

The Junior race was an overwhelming victory for Goldsworth, with 48 points.  They beat their nearest rivals, Knaphill, by 74 points.  Their runners filled the first four positions.

SCHOOL TEAMS FOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

Woking Boys’ Grammar School provide all seven runners in the Woking and District 18 to 19 years team to run in the County Cross-Country Championships tomorrow (Saturday) at Reigate.  They are K. James, M. Brook, C. Middleton, J. Carpenter, J. O’Keefe, D.  Smithers and M. Hawes.

 

Other teams announced are: Junior (Under 15): C. Church, A. Wade, W. Hughes, R. Bowden and M. Rance (Goldsworth C.S.) P. Adams and D. Robinson (Woking Grammar School), Armstrong and Coxon (Knaphill), D. Gale (Monument Hill), Foster (West Byfleet) and J. Bell (Chobham).

 

Intermediate (15 to 17 years): A. Usher, G. Theobold, R. Orme, A. Landon and Scott (Woking Grammar School), K. Barber and D. Kimbell (Goldsworth), M. Blake (Highlands) and R. Chitty (Monument Hill).

JUNIORS WIN SCHOOLS COUNTY TITLE

 

In excellent conditions and glorious spring weather, the Schools’ County cross-country was held at Reigate on Saturday.

 

The Woking Junior (Under 15) and Intermediate (15-17) teams both gave a good account of themselves, the juniors being placed first and the Intermediates second out of 11 teams.   In the Junior event the six scoring runners from the Woking area were among the first 19 runners home, with excellent points total of 57.

On the results of these races, Church, Hughes, Gale and Armstrong in the juniors and Blake in the Intermediates will go forward to represent Surrey in the All-England Championships at Peterborough on March 18th.

 

The trophies were presented by Mr. Anderson, the County P.E. Organisers, but unfortunately, as the previous winners of the Junior Cup had failed to return it, Woking Juniors were unable to receive the Cup that day.   The Cup has now been retrieved.
