WOKING AND DISTRICT SCHOOLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY 1959

 

VENUE: WOKING PARK SATURDAY 14th FEBRUARY 1959

 

 

Although they had the first man home in the sixth Woking inter schools’ cross-country championships on Saturday, Monument Hill failed to retain the Talbot shield for juniors.  Run over a two-mile course in Woking Park the junior team race was won by Knaphill “A” team.

 

 

Only two teams competed in the senior section, and Woking Grammar School retained their title, having the first six men home to beat the West Byfleet team easily.

 

 

Mr. L. W. Cheeseman (chairman, Woking Council) started the races. Presenting the prizes he said that the people of Woking should be proud of the splendid performances put up.    The size of the field was most encouraging and augured well for the athletes of tomorrow.

 

 

Although about 70 juniors and 16 seniors took part in the two races.  The results will have a bearing on the selection of the teams to represent Woking, but the ‘flu prevent West Byfleet Secondary entering a junior team and reduced the number of runners by over forty.   Times cannot be compared with those of previous years as the course is a new one, and although slightly longer is not as difficult as before.

 

 

Individual Winner In the Junior Race Was l. Bailey (Monument Hill) 14 min 22sec; second was A. Landon (Woking Grammar) 14min 23 sec and third I. Plumridge (Goldsworth “A”) 14 min 25 sec.

 

 

The Senior Race Was Won by N. Brook in 14min 24 sec, with B. Frost 14 min 27 sec, second; and K. James third in 14 min, 36 sec.

 

 

The junior team races was won by Knaphill “A”, represented by Collyer, Williams, Cook, Stevens,  Dixon and Nicholls with 60 points.   The Woking Grammar team with 89 points was second and Monument Hill, 96 points were third.

 

 

The winning Grammar School senior team was K. James, N. Brook, B. Frost, R. Lee, E. Clemens and C. Ingram.
