SURREY HONOUR FOR LOCAL CHAMPION
TONY COOKMAN
Tony Cookman of Woking A.C. has been selected for the Surrey
team to compete in the All-England schools’ sports at Kingston-upon-Hull,
later this month. He was picked as a
result of his victory in the boys’ 100 yards at the Surrey Schools’
Championships at Morspur Park recently, when competing for the Woking district.
Also chosen for the Surrey team was
William Hughes in the junior boys’ mile.
Tony Cookman tied for first place in the 100 yards with a
Croydon boy, both recording 10.7 seconds.
Tony, a pupil at West
Byfleet C.S.
School, followed this
success by breaking three Woking Club records on Saturday at the Coronation
trophy meeting. He must stand a good chance
of making the final of the All-England boys’ 100 yards if he can reproduce the
form he showed over the short sprint (10.5 sec. for 100 yards, 24.2 sec for 200
yards and 54.8 sec for 440 yards) on Saturday.
Despite winning the intermediate boys’ discuss (161feet) at
the county sports, Nigel Bird, also of Woking,
was not picked for the county team, throwing a foot beneath the qualifying
standard. On Saturday morning before the
Coronation trophy meeting, Nigel competed in the Southern A.A.A. Junior and
Youth Championships at Motspur
Park, coming sixth in the
youth discus (163ft, 10in).
