SCHOOLS COMPETE FOR ATHLETIC HONOURS
----------------
Keep it Up, Urges Lord Aberdare
-----------------
West Byfleet County Secondary School
took the junior honours at the 16th annual secondary schools’
athletic meeting held at the Woking and
District Schools’ Athletic Association at Kingfield Sports Ground on Wednesday.
Their boys retrained the under 15’s trophy with 27 points,
other placing being Knaphill (23), Woking Grammar (22) and Monument Hill
(20). The girls took the junior trophy
from Goldsworth with 23 points and next in order were St. Bede’s Send (20), Knaphill
(19) and Goldsworth (17).
Three schools – Bisley, Mayford
and Gordon Boys – fought a keen battle for the senior cup, which was eventually
won by Bisley with 42 points, the other two being equal second with 31 points
each. It was a runaway victory for
Goldsworth to retain the senior girls’ cup.
They secured 21 points and nearest to them were Chobham (4) and Monument
Hill (3).
The
trophies were presented by Lord Aberdare, the well known local sporting peer,
who said how much pleasure it gave him to see so many young people (there were
380 entries) taking part in sport. “These are great days for athletics”,
said Lord Aberdare in speaking of this remarkable year in which Roger Bannister
had achieved the 4-minute and Miss Leather the 5-minute mile. Athletics was a grand sport and there were
few better things they could keep up in an after-life.
