WOKING District Schools Annual Cross-Country championships

1971

WOKING District Schools held their annual cross-country championships at Winston Churchill School last week, and the races were completely dominated by the exceptionally strong teams from Woking Grammar School with Winston Churchill themselves providing the main challenge.

The fifth-year race was held on Monday, and with no grammar team present Winston Churchill won the team race and senior trophy by just one point from St. Bedes.

Churchill’s Graham Armstrong was the clear winner, and he was chased home by Armour (West Byfleet), Cockburn (West Byfleet), Plumbridge (St. Bedes), Dance (St. Bedes) and Turner (St. Bedes) in that order.

Sheerwater school provided the first two home in Wednesday’s fourth-year race in the shape of Graham Pritchard and Mike Nolan.

Winston Churchill’s Trendell filled fourth place, but the third, fifth and sixth places of Nicky Youl, Ian Logan and Robin Thompkins, all of the grammar school, led them to an easy team victory.

The first-, second- and third-year races on Tuesday, as well as the intermediate and junior trophies, were all won by the grammar school by huge margins, with team scores very little above the minimum possible.

Timothy Eglin set the pattern in the first-year race when he won a close finish from team-mate Robert Tomkys, and only Peter Hargreaves of Winston Churchill and R. Spall of St. Bedes (third and fourth) could split them from two more grammar school runners, Dick Butler and Paul Buddery.

Robert Moore and Jimmy Wright were way out in front of the second-year race and their team mates Richard Atkins and Jeremy Hayllar in sixth and seventh places clinched the grammar school victory.  Colin Moulder was third for West Byfleet, while D. Philips of Highlands and I. Collett of Winston Churchill filled fourth and fifth-positions.

Sheerwater star Terry Walsh took the third-year race, and was well pressed by David Ashby and Tony Tomkys of the grammar school.  Completing the first six were M. Ansell of Winston Churchill in fifth place and Olden and Ireland of St. Bedes.

Winston Churchill, who has dominated the distinct championships in past seasons, did well to finish second to the grammar school in every case, and St. Bedes produced some good performances.
