Chobham Win Schools Cross-Country

There was a flash of red shorts and multi-coloured vests under the cloudy sky. One hundred and twenty-two pairs of heels dug into the ground, churning of the muddy surface as the chairman of Woking Council (Mr. A. D. Campbell) started the entrants in the fourth annual inter-schools cross country championships at Send Barnes Farm on Saturday.

There were ten schools from the Woking area entering, and the contest was sponsored by the Woking Athletic club in co-operation with the Woking and District schools Sports Council. This year a new course was used over a distance of approximately two and a half miles. Each school entered a team, but in addition there were groups of individual from different schools, who were with too old or not of a sufficiently high standard for their teams.

At first the boys bunched closely, but as the going became harder they gradually spread out into a long crocodile with a group of about ten closely together in the lead. As they approached the stream that number had dwindled to six, and 20 yards behind lay another group of about 15. The stream took no casualties, that is, nobody fell headlong in the dirty water. But there were several boot-fulls, a few competitors got struck in the heavy mud on the opposite bank and a few had to stop to pick up lost plimsolls.

Up a long lane and over another field and the formation appeared roughly the same. Now the runners were approaching the finish and made their final bursts. P. Bolas, aged 15, one of the individuals from Bisley School, romped home first by 15 yards in 18 min. 6 sec. Second was s M. Holmes, aged 13, of Goldsworth C.S. School, in 18 min, 8 sec, and R. Angliss, another boy from Bisely School, was third in 18 min. 11 sec.

Officials of the Woking Athletic Club busied themselves adding up the team scores. Then the following result was announced:-

1.    Chobham A 94 points

2.    Bisley 107 points

3.    Monument Hill 153 points
