The following article appeared in the
Surrey Advertiser on 20th May 1967 Children’s
Cycling Success – Italy Four West Byfleet County
Secondary School children represented Great Britain in the COUPE SCOLAIRE ROME, 1967, cycling
competition – and returned home on Saturday with a huge silver cup and two
gold medals. The cup was presented by
the Italian Ministry of Education top the team, who came second, tying with
France. The competition was won by the
four boys in the Swiss team. Charles Blackshaw, 13, of 7 Station road, West Byfleet and Simon Tibble,12, of Bogart, Woodham Park Way, West Byfleet, both
won a gold medal for the highest marks in the individual proficiencies. Oriel Southwood, 13, of 11 Romans Way, Pyrford and Karen Sherstone, 13, of Melville Court, Binfield Road, Byfleet,
were the two girl members of the team. Mr. Hudson,
the school cycling and road safety master, trained
the children on Raleigh RSW 16 cycles, although in Rome the team was provided
with Italian smaller-wheeled machines. Cooling
off Sergt. Todd of the Surrey
County Constabulary and Mr. Ted Bannister of 2 Romans Way, Pyrford, the
national cycling organiser of the National Cycling Proficiency Scheme,
sponsored by R.o.S.P.A., were with the children. The team met children from
13 European countries together with the team from Japan and all the
competitors spent much of their time cooling off in the luxurious motel’s
swimming pool. Charles and Simon shared a
room with two Danish boys and Karen and Oriel shared their room with the two
girls from the Danish team. This is the first time a
team from Great Britain has entered the competition as previously there was
no one to back the children. This
year the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. Ltd. stepped in. An audience with His
Holiness Pope Paul VI was arranged for the teams and each child was given a
medallion key ring as a memento. The British team were
interviewed on Italian television and signed autographs for Italian children. Jersey wool suits in red
for the girls and navy for the boys were designed for the British team by a
student at the London School of Fashion. Cycle Show These suites together with
the story of the competition will be on show at the National Cycle and
Motorcycle Show at Earls Court in September. The competition on Friday
started at 4pm and went on till 10pm so that the fierce heat of the day was
avoided. The main part of the competition
was a large course marked out in the stadium with many road junctions and
intersections. Great Britain, Japan
and Switzerland had special sets of road signs so that they could use the
left-hand side of the course. Then there was the smaller
course through a narrow lane, over a see-saw plank, a “Halt” sign where the
competitors stopped and put one foot to the ground, then under two low
bridges and finally through a zigzag course of bollards. There were two indoor tests
for recognition of each team's own country’s road signs. This was the first time
that the members of the British team had been abroad. The competition will be
held abroad again next year. After the British team’s
success Mr. Hudson has been deluged with applicants to take the Cycling
Proficiency Test which entitles children to compete for places in the West
Byfleet team for next year. Kay Orchard, of Oakview,
York Road, Byfleet and Graham Moore of 8 The Cedars, Byfleet, the team reserves trained with and supported the team. “I enjoyed everything - except the food”, said Karen Sherstone. The two boys agreed with her. “We were among others who had a private audience
with the Pope”, said Karen. “But
he spoke in Italian and French and we could not understand anything”! |
