West Byfleet Secondary school: log book for 1947
8^th January 1947		School reopened with 447 children and a full staff except Mr. Evans who is unwell.
17^th January 1947		Canteen, kitchen and store cupboards broken into during the night. The police have been contacted and have the matter in hand.
23^rd January 1947		A police officer gave a talk on Road Safety to the children in three groups between 9.30 and 10.50. The timetable adjusted accordingly.
3^rd February 1947		Mr. Hunt commenced four weeks teaching practice.
5^th February 1947		Mr. Gould, H.M.I. spent the day with the school.
10^th February 1947		Miss Wade has been seconded to Egham Hythe Girls School temporally. Miss Peck on supply vice Miss Wade.
17^th February 1947		Miss Wade resumed duties am
17^th, 18^th & 20^th February 1947		Miss Wade absent attending a course at Walton Girls’ school on Intelligence testing.
19^th February 1947		Mr. H. Gower, Miss Sykes, H.M.I.’s spent the day in the school.

21^st February 1941		School closed for the mid-term holiday till 26^th February.
26^th February 1947		School reopened
11^th March 1947		Mr. F.J. Codling was appointed for P.T. Games to commence duties towards the end of April.
18^th March 1947		Mrs. McGrath absent pm attending interview for headship at County Hall.
19^th March 1947		Mr. Evans absent on attending medical examination under Disabled persons Act.
20^th March 1947		School closed today for the Woking Schools Music Festival.
25^th March 1947		Miss Edwards and 33 children attended choral speech section of the Wimbledon Music Festival. The choir was placed 3^rd.
28^th March 1947		School closed after afternoon session until 16^th April for Easter Vacation.
14^th April 1947		School reopened with full staff of 497 children. During the vacation the canteen, kitchen and store cupboard were forcibly entered with considerable loss due to theft and wilful destruction (7/4/47). Organised by Mr. Chandler a party of 33 children visited Giswil, Switzerland (31/3/47 – 9/4/47).
28^th April 1947		Mr. F. J. Coding commenced duty as assistant master teaching Physical Training and Games and Form Master of Prep B. The timetable has been changed today until further notice in view of Miss Wade leaving on 30^th next. Mrs. Hooper is teaching the girls PT and games. Mr. Cave taking the boys art not taken by Mrs. Hooper and Mr. Evans, P.A. English and Maths with 2C and 3C. Mr. Horn and Mr. Millow, from Coopers-Hill commenced four weeks school practice.
30^th April 1947		Miss Wade resigned from the staff from today.
20^th May 1947		Mrs. McGrath absent attending interview for Sutton West county secondary school – Headmistress.
21^st May 1947		Woking and District School Sports 1947 The school closed during the afternoon session for the Woking and District Athletic Sports at Kingfield. The trophies were presented by Miss. H. Cowen. The school scored 6 firsts, 4 seconds and 4 thirds.

23^rd May 1947	The school was closed today for the Whitsun vacation.
2^nd June 1947	School reopened.
3^rd June 1947	A party of four children to attend the Telephone exchange each Tuesday until further notice 11-12am.
4^th June 1947	Mr. E. M. Winson commenced duties on supply for P.T. and Games. School closed for church fête.
6^th June 1947	Mrs. Winson was today appointed to the staff, her appointment to date from 4^th June 1947.
17^th June 1947	Mr. Ward with 24 children from the third year attended Vickers Works during the afternoon session.
23^rd June 1947	Mr. Chandler attending UNESCO course for a week.
27^th June 1947	Mr. Gould and Mr. Pocock, staff H.M.I.’s for Kent, spent part of the day in school.
30^th June 1947	Mr. Chandler resumed duty.

24^th July 1947	Miss Bailey and colleague, H.M.I.’s visited the school to see Miss Aldridge and discuss the D.S. problems with the Headmaster. Mr. Cave, Mr. Evans and Miss Gregory were today appointed to the permanent staff. Miss Galloway seriously cut her hand in the execution of her duties. The doctor, who was summoned, stitched the cut and she went home at 2.50pm.
25^th July 1947	The school was closed today until 2^nd September.
2^nd September 1947	The school reopened today with a full staff and 466 children – 238 boys and 288 girls. Miss Gregory commenced duties to specialize in ‘C’ steam English and Scripture.
15^th September 1947	Miss Pope, County PT Organiser, called and saw Mrs. Winson.
17^th September 1947	Mr. Gower H.M.I. visited and discussed various matters with me, he also notified me that a full inspection of the school would take place early in November. Miss Ward absent today taking L.R.A.M. exam,
18^th September 1947	Dr. Alexderson newly appointed county inspector visited the school and noticed activities of the intended organisation for the school
19^th September 1947	Miss Ward resumed duties.
29^th September 1947	Mr. Ward absent attending interview in Northern Ireland.
1^st October 1947	Mr. Ward resumed duty having been appointed to a post in Northumberland.
14^th October 1947	The school was represented today at the funeral of John Goodey, who was killed in a road accident, by four children, Miss Edwards and the Headmaster.
24^th October 1947	The school closed today for mid-term break until 3^rd November.
10^th November 1947	A reporting inspection of the school commenced today. H.M.I.’s present were Miss Sykes, Messrs. Heath, Goud, Howard, Harry and Moody.
11^th November 1947	Miss Bailey, H.M.I. present
13^th November 1947	Inspection XXXX with discussion by Inspectors and various members of the staff and finally a Governors’ meeting at which the Headmaster was present.
14^th November 1947	Mr. W.E. Ward resigned his post as from today as Handicraft master.
20^th November 1947	School was closed today for the Royal Wedding.
25^th November 1947	Mrs. A. Phee was today appointed to the temporary staff commencing from 1^st January next for maths and commercial subjects.
1^st December 1947	Mrs. Golden, H.M.I. spent the day inspecting the Physical Training and Games.
5^th December 1947	Miss Aldridge absent attending interview.
9^th December 1947	Mr. Evans absent attending Milford.
19^th December 1947	School closed until 7^th January for Christmas holiday.
