West Byfleet Secondary School: log book for 1946

8th January 1946

School reopened.

Mr. K.N. Downing Williams commenced duties to teach craft and technical drawing with the boys.  Mr. Walton Evans commenced on supply.  Being unwell to take the subjects I really require I have assimilated the scheme so that instead of science he will take hygiene and physiology as current topics.    The county surveyor called to discusses the situation of temporary accommodation.   Mr. Philips visited to discuss the transfer of girls to the school from the Home Office school at Addlestone.

17th January 1946

Miss Grey, Physical Training Inspector for Ministry of Education visited the school.  I admitted twelve girl’s from Princess Mary’s Village Home Addlestone.

22nd January 1946

Mr. E. Brackfield, County Surveyors Dept., visited the school to report on the fences, shelters.

23rd January 1946

Preliminary Special Place Examination held during the morning session when a special timetable was operated in the rest of the school.

28th January 1946

Mrs. Bean commenced supply work to take crafts.

29th January 1946

Mr. Thomas on supply for afternoon session.

1st February 1946

Mr. E.B. Sibley, County Inspector, called to see Mr. W. Evans.  Owing to numerous staff absent a temporary timetable has been put into operation during the past week.

12th February 1946

County Surveyor called re; Situation of temporary buildings.   It is now suggested that some should be on the school field.

14th February 1946

Miss Pope called re: secondment of Miss Felgate to Hinchley Wood.

20th February 1946

Miss Campbell (Canteen Organiser) visited the school canteen, also Mr. Anderson, PT organiser).

21st February 1946

School closed after afternoon session until Tue 26th Feb for mid-term holiday.

26th February 1946

School reopened after mid-term holiday.

1st March 1946

Miss Dodwell (Mrs Evans) terminated her appointment as Domestic Subjects teacher today.

6th March 1946

Mrs. Curran on supply vice Miss Felgate who is seconded to Hinchley Wood Day Commercial School on Mondays and Wednesdays.

A performance of “The Rebel Maid” was held each evening in the school hall.

11th April 1946

The school closed today after the afternoon session for the Easter vacation until 30th April 1946.

12th April 1946

The following article appeared in the “Woking News and Mail” today:

 

Over a hundred scholars of West Byfleet Secondary School combined to perform the opera “The Rebel Maid by Montague F. Phillips, at the School hall last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  The young performers delighted the audiences, and the ambitious production was staged in a manner that reflected credit on the pupils and those who were responsible for their training.

 

Chief among those who took part were: Ronald Nash as Derek, John Morris (Lord Milverton), Brian Kelland (Sir Stephen Crespigny), Desmond Nicholls (Capt. Percy Jerome), Brian Barton (Septimus Bunkle), Peter Heath (Solomon Hooker), Philip Myers (Sam), John Eastwood (Roger), John Castle (William of Orange), Geoffrey Simpson (Sergeant), Pamela Rumble (Lady Elizabeth Westoff), June Duckett (Abigail), Gladys Harrington (Dorothy), and Pat Day (Lady Mary Trefusis, the Rebel maid.  Others played as dancers, footmen, English and Dutch soldiers and courtiers and fishermen, while a chorus of 59 gave fine support.

 

Credit for the back stage preparations goes to Miss M. King (producer and musical director), Miss J. Ward (assistant producer and accompanist), Mr. R. Powell (stage manager, lighting), assisted by Mr. H.W. Ash and Mr. W. Evans, Mr. K.D. Williams (design and production of scenery helped by boys of 4A), Mr. A.H.W. Chandler (property manager), Mr. S. R. Penn (accompanist), Miss L. Felgate (dances), Mesdames Perry, Bean, Hooper and Richardson and Misses O. Edwards and B. Jeves (costumes and make-up).  Mrs. Hooper and boys of the art classes (posters).  The proceeds were in aid of the school funds.

30th April 1946

Reopened school with 453 children.   Times of sessions altered as from today

9 -12.15 1.40 to 4pm

Miss Loveday EastLaugh commenced duty as Art and Craft Mistress in charge of form 1A.  Miss Bean on supply taking Domestic Science.

8th May 1946

Mrs. Collins commenced duties on supply for form 4.

20th May 1946

Mrs. Finney commenced duties on supply vice Mrs. Richardson.

4th June 1946

Medical Inspection of part of the 1932 group.

5th June 1946

School closed for the Woking and District School Sports.  The boys gained 25 points to win their section while the girls with 22 points were second.  Five girls and four boys were chosen to represent the District in the county sports to he held at Guildford on 6th July.

7th June 1946

School closed till 17th June for Whitsun vacation. Notice received that Audrey Janet Honeybum and Grace Davies had gained special places to Kingston.  Mrs. Finney terminated her duties on supply.

12th June 1946

Notice received that Shalagh Walpole and Janet Squires had been awarded Homecraft S. Places at Guildford.

17th June 1946

Reopened school.   Miss Miller commenced duties on the staff to teach needlework and history.

18th June 1946

Notice received that John Castle, Alan Swanson and Denis Thanalt have been awarded special places at Guildford Junior Technical School.

19th June 1946

The County Surveyor with Mr. Stollery and Mr. Kenridge visited the school to consider redecoration necessary.

27th June 1946

Further examination results. Technical Kingston: Malcolm Choate, Douglas Drake, Desmond Nicholls.   Commercial: Ann Sutton, Pamela Rumble, Sylvia Goody.

3rd July 19466

Further Exam result. John Docker, Tech. Guildford.

4th July 1946

Miss O. Reeves commenced duty on supply to observe the work with Miss Felgate for two days before taking over her duties.

5th July 1946

Miss Felgate terminated her appointment as assistant mistress in charge of physical training and games.

Mrs. M. McGrath absent visiting Horley C. Primary school for Headship of which she has been invited to apply.

19th July 1946

Miss Reeves absent pm attending interview.

24th July 1946

Int4rhouse athletics meeting held on the West Byfleet Rec. during the afternoon.

26th July 1946

School closed for mid-summer vacation until 3rd September.  Messrs. H.W. Ash and K.H. Williams relinquished their posts on the permanent staff and Mrs. Bean and Miss O’Reeves as supply teachers.  Seven boys left to take up special places at Technical schools, five girls to commercial, two girls Homecraft, ten boys and five girls to Grammar schools and eighteen boys and eighteen girls on account of age.

3rd September 1946

School reopened with 464 children and sixteen staff.  The following news members of staff commenced duties:

Miss Stella Wade, girls PT, Games etc.

Mr. W.C. Southgate, boys craft and tech. draw.

Mr. W.J. Semple, boys science etc.

Miss Aldridge, B.Sc., Domestic Science.

Mr. K.R. Cave attending this school for six months as training to qualify as handicraft teacher was put in charge of the woodwork until the new master can commence his duties.

Mrs. Collins was on supply until the newly appointed mistress can take up duties to take girls science and ‘B’ stream maths.

Mr. K. Carrdus commenced three weeks observation prior to emergency training.

 

26th September 1946

The Headmaster absent for the morning sessions attending interview at County Hall for the post of General Inspector.

1st October 1946

Mr. W.E. Ward and Miss G.E. Cullows commenced duties for woodwork and girls’ biology and ‘B’ stream maths respectively.

2nd October 1946

Miss Pope, County P.T. inspector visited the school and saw Miss Wade take P.T. lessons.

14th October 1946

Messrs. R. Fawceth and A.H. Frost, Coopers Hill Training College, commenced four weeks teacher training practice with the school.

15th October 1946

Mr. Phillips, County Inspector, visited to discuss requisitions and other matters.

17th October 1946

Mr. Phillips and Miss Adams, County Inspectors called go give Cathell New Verbal Group tests to 12 “houses” girls.    There being no other possible accommodation Mrs. Hooper too her 13 boys to the Recreation Ground for games instead of art.

25th October 1946

School closed today until 4th November for mid-term vacation.

4th November 1946

School reopened,

5th / 6th / 7th / 8th November 1946

A party of 42 children with 3 members of the staff visited the Britain can Make It” exhibition each day.   The time table was adjusted accordingly.

13th November 1946

Messrs. Fawarth and Frost terminated the period of teaching practice in the school.

18th November 1946

Mr. Phillips, County Inspector, visited the school re: Houses Girls Group Test Results.

15th November 1946

Mr. Cave absent attending interview at Ministry of Education.

27th November 1946

Mr. Sibley visited school to carry out a “trail” examination of 50 children just above special place age.  Timetable amended accordingly.

4th December 1946

School closed during the morning session to allow Preliminary common Entrance Examination to be held.  Forty two children and three members of staff visited the “Britain Can Make It” exhibition for the whole day.

20th December 1946

School closed for the Christmas vacation until 8th January 1947.

The whole school assembled in the Hall at the end of the afternoon school and Mr. Stollery, chairman of the Governors, presented the House Challenge cup to the winning house, Stollery.   Medals were also presented to boys who were in the football teams which won the Hood Shield and Wood cup for 1945-46.
