THE REAL NEED IN SCHOOLS
The real need in schools in this county is to
grant all skill and knowledge to character building, while still concentrating
on work already done in the schools.
This was state by Mr. D.W. Steel, the deputy chief
education officer for Surrey at the
He said that while it was here that parents
entered the picture the schools could do a great deal in the equipping the boys
and girls in the material world and also for the challenge in life.
The threat of poverty in an extreme form had disappeared
and in the next 20 years hours of work would become shorter. By the time you reach middle age you will
have the kind of jobs where you will be engaged only half the time and here is
where the danger comes in, warning Mr. Steel.
“There is an element of truth in the saying that ‘Satin will find work for idle hands’.
“Build up a sense of being
discriminating and be critical. Go
through life asking questions, but at the same time be kind and understanding”,
Mr. Steel advised the pupils.
Mr. F.W. Goodyer (headmaster) in
his report, enumerated visits made by pupils during the year and the number of
clubs flourishing in the school. These
included the School Society, which continued to look after the ages and the
lonely and which this year had raised enough money to supply 70 old people with
Christmas cheer.
Mr. Goodger said it had been an
outstanding year in the school for money-raising efforts, and an outstanding afford
had been made for mentally handicapped children. It was a proud moment for the school, when
they were able to present to the chairman of Woking Council, a cheque for £385,
which was a tenth of the money raised in the whole of the
Dealing with examination
results, he said that they had been the best results the school had ever had
academically. One hundred and two
candidates passed a total of 330 papers at ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels. For the first time in the history of the
school, a girl passed the third grade in an R.S.A. examination.
Mr. Goodger paid tribute to the
work of his staff. He also paid tribute
to two members of the staff who were retiring shortly – Mr. D. Rose, the art
master, and Mr. M.J. Allen, history master.
Rev. A.J. Costin, chairman of
the school governors, traced the history of education in this country and the
establishing of secondary schools in 1944, when
