The following report issued in 1960 by the HM INSPECTORS on the school makes interesting reading and explains probably what became the rationale that led to the closure in 1976

Report by H.M. Inspectors on West Byfleet Secondary School – inspected 29th, 30th and 31st March 1960

After 1961 I can only hope to record details of the school history in a piecemeal and anecdotal information.   Should any past pupil or teacher have any interesting material such as photographs, the school magazine The Link” or “The Lantern”, speech day or sports days programmes please get in contact.

Of interest may be the story behind the construction of the pylon in the corner of the playing field.     I know little about the structure as it was skilfully assembled before I arrived and taken-down, just prior to closure, after I left.   If Mr. Peter Gibson who managed the project and indeed attended the school 1953 – 1959 and then started as a student teacher in 1960, could contact me I will be happy to write-up the details.

Finally, sadly, I know about the deaths of the following teachers.

  • Mr. John Walton Bishop, BA who taught English from 1959 until retirement in 1975 died aged 68 in January 1984
  • Mrs. Ruby Edith Randal who taught English from 1961 died in May 1996 aged 80
  • Mr. Leslie Charles Swann who taught Religious Knowledge until he retired in 1971, died aged 82 in November 1995.
  • Mr. Ivor Twynoj Williams who taught P.E. / Games and Mathematics died in April 1994 aged 54
